The Socialist Party warmly welcomes the successes of the People Before Profit Alliance, the Tipperary Workers and Unemployed Action Group as well as the gains for independent lefts and the Workers Party in Cork and Waterford in the local elections. Combined with the excellent results achieved by the Socialist Party in the locals but particularly Joe Higgins’ outstanding victory in the Euro elections, the position of socialists has been significantly strengthened.
The pro-Lisbon political parties do not need to raise funds for the ‘Yes’ to Lisbon campaign. Big business is directly funding their side of the debate.
The announcement that Intel and Ryanair will spend hundreds of thousands of euro to try to achieve a Yes vote in the upcoming Lisbon Treaty represents an unconcealed attempt by big business to shape politics in its favour.
On 2 July Ulster Bank announced another wave of branch closures and job losses as well as indicating they will be taking steps to repossess more properties. In the coming period all the banks will be implementing similar plans.

rr route as a direct bus from the estate into the city centre. Dublin Bus announced that the route, which has been in place for decades, would be axed as part of their plans to cut 120 buses and 160 drivers.
