Socialist Party candidate for the North East ward Dave Keating this morning slammed HSE boss Brendan Drumm’s €500,000+ wage cheque and said that it was an insult in the week that tens of thousands of rent allowance recipients received correspondence from the HSE outlining cuts in their allowance.
Dave Keating said: “I am receiving daily phone calls now from tenants who are worried and distraught about the rent allowance cutbacks. People who are on the poverty line are being pushed down below it. And now we learn that the man who heads up the organisation that is implementing the cuts is pocketing more than half a million a year. It is a total disgrace.”
Dave Keating said that the tables should be turned and that rent allowance rates should be protected and Professor Drumm’s salary sharply cut.

How abortion rights were won in the US
Below is an article written by the sister section of the Socialist Party in the US, Socialist Alternative. In the light of the restricting of abortion rights in a whole number of US states in recent years, as well as the current growing mood and movement for abortion rights in Ireland, the lessons from this struggle are really relevant, as well it being a timely moment to ask how the right to choose can be won permanently for women.
