The economic crisis is not going away. The government’s policies are making it worse. The so-called opposition say cuts are needed and the ICTU has not defended workers from the impact of the recession.

This government is thoroughly contemptible. Its policies of facilitating the super-rich and its worshipping of private sector greed have resulted in the shameful fact that 455,000 people are on the live register.

In an obituary of George Best, comrade Peter Hadden wrote “George Best composed poetry with his feet”. What a wonderful complement to a football genius from the working class streets of Belfast. And now Marie Jones and Martin Lynch have gone one further. They have “Besty” using those poetic feet dancing. And that soft Northern Irish accent singing in their unforgettable play “Dancing Shoes - The George Best Story”.

Only Labour can deliver real change! That's the message on leaflets dropping into homes around the country. One recent opinion poll gave Labour 32% of the vote, indicating that they could become the biggest party in the state.

Despite being the most unpopular Taoiseach in the history of the state, at the head of the most unpopular government in the history of the state, Brian Cowen has been ranked as the fifth best global leader of the year by the American Newsweek magazine.

Members of the Socialist Party held a protest outside the Russian Embassy in Dublin on Monday in response to the growing persecution of environmentalists, human rights activists, trade unionists and peaceful protesters inRussia.

The need for a total separation of the church from the state has long been argued for by socialists and the Socialist Party. Recent developments, both in Northern Ireland and Southern Ireland but also internationally, have put this issue centre stage in political debate. The contrast between how the government treats the wealthy developers and bankers who are in trouble and ordinary people never fails to shock. While thousands were forced out onto the streets to protest against cuts in the health budget which have resulted in the closure of essential respite services for the families of those with intellectual or physical disabilities, the government continues its kid glove treatment of those who helped cause the economic crisis.

The Fianna Fáil/ Green Party Government has just about limped to the shelter of the Dáil summer recess, battered and severely frayed at the edges. Now there must be serious questions about how long more it can stagger from crisis to crisis.

An IPSOS/MRBI poll published in June in the Irish Tines showed Labour as themost popular party in the state with 32% support. This had never happened before in the history of elections or opinion polling in this state.
